Cyberbullying: What is it?
Cyberbullying is when one child targets another child using
technology such as the internet and cell phones to embarrass,
harass, and harm a person. The cyberbully can use these technologies
to:
- set up mean and reputation damaging websites
- create polls or online surveys (who is least popular, uglier, nerdier, fatter,
richer, poorer, etc.)
- post hurtful comments or threats on a child's webpage such as Facebook or MySpace
- post provocative content about the victim online
- create a negative blog about a victim
- send instant messages harassing the victim
- send IMs to others pretending to be the victim (cyberbullying by proxy)
- sending hurtful text messages
- sending picture messages
- sending malicious email or viruses
- impersonating the victim online

"THE METHODS USED ARE LIMITED ONLY BY THE CHILD'S IMAGINATION AND ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY."
* Note that cyberbullying is different from cyberstalking or cyberharrassing. Cyberbullying involves children under the age of 18. When adults take the same actions to harrass one another using technology it is called cyberstalking or cyberharrassing.
Cyberbullying is a serious probelm among children; therefore, we need to educate them how to use emerging technologies safely.
